Traditional recipes prove a winning formula for local preserve makers

A Fyansford family business has won four gold medals and a best-in-class award at this year's Melbourne Royal Australian Food Awards. Pennyroyal Farm and Otways Preserves, run by Chris and Debra Horniblow, have kept to traditional recipes, Australian-grown fruit and small batches. The couple make their jams in batches of 40 to 70 jars, without preservatives or fillers. They supply independent supermarkets, fruit and vegetable shops and gourmet stores rather than major supermarkets, as they do not want to grow too quickly. The business has earned seven gold, 13 silver and 19 bronze medals at the awards in total.

Gen Fyansford shrinks block sizes for first land release in two years

Developer ICD Property has brought forward the sale of 10 home sites at the Gen Fyansford estate in Geelong this month, as existing supply has almost sold out. The sites are part of a new 45-lot release, the first new land offered at the estate in more than two years, with most lots launching in early 2026. Development manager Bobby Kennedy said the average block size will fall to about 440 square metres from 500 square metres, as buyers are more price sensitive. Lots will be priced from $435,000 to $605,000.
