A Christmas tradition turns 30 as Denis Walter brings festive cheer to Geelong

Carols by the Bay, a free Christmas event on the Geelong waterfront, is marking its 30th year. Denis Walter started the carols in 1997 after noticing Geelong had no waterfront Christmas celebration. Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj says the event brings families together and draws about 20,000 people each year. This year's event will run alongside Christmas markets and a minibus of flash mob elves. The carols begin at 7pm on November 21 at Steampacket Gardens, alongside the lighting of a floating Christmas tree.

Geelong Christmas celebrations return with carols and floating tree

Geelong's Carols by the Bay and the Floating Christmas Tree will return together on Saturday, 21 November, at Steampacket Gardens. The free event will mark 30 years since the carols were first held in 1997. Denis Walter OAM will host the carols, followed by the lighting of the 25-metre tree. The tree returns for its 13th season with water jets, barge projections and an updated audiovisual display. Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM said the events give the community a chance to gather while rising costs make the season hard for some households.
