Young leader a shining light

Roqya Husseini, deputy chair of Cultura's Multicultural Youth Council, has received the Victorian Refugee Youth Leadership Award. The honour recognises her leadership, advocacy and commitment to a fairer society. Governor of Victoria Margaret Gardner and Minister for Multicultural Affairs Paul Edbrooke presented the award at Government House on Wednesday 14 October. Husseini works with young people from diverse cultural communities to advocate for their issues and increase representation of young people from refugee backgrounds. Cultura chief executive Jess Harper said the organisation was incredibly proud of her work.

Stepping up for a day

Two Brimbank youth council members, Maria Ansari, 15, and Zoe Goldenberg, 17, served as the council's inaugural young mayors alongside Mayor Virginia Tachos on Wednesday 23 September. Their day included a round table discussion on Melbourne's west and a visit to Parliament House to meet Premier Ben Carroll. The pair also met council executives, councillors and staff. They ended the day by giving a speech in the Council Chamber. Ansari said young people need passion and courage rather than lots of experience to lead.

Hay Youth step up as next generation of leaders

Seven young people from Hay have gained skills in confidence, resilience and communication this year. They attended the Ignite Leadership Camp and the Magic Moments Business Summit. Hay is an Anchor Community under the Foundation for Rural and Region Renewal's NextGen Blueprint program, which encourages younger people to take an active part in community decisions. Free workshops for local employers and community groups are planned for October. They will focus on attracting, engaging and keeping Gen Z volunteers and workers.
