Public transport fares capped in election promise

Victoria's Labor Party has promised to cap public transport fares at $30 a week for full fare holders and $15 a week for concession card users if re-elected in November. The two-year policy, costing $206 million, aims to save commuters up to $1400 annually. Existing free travel for under 18s and seniors on weekends will continue, with changes taking effect in January 2025. The announcement follows a previous fare surcharge apology and a $1.7 billion Coalition pledge for new trains in Melbourne's western suburbs.

Councils call for Geelong to Werribee rail trial using Warrnambool trains

The City of Greater Geelong and Wyndham City councils have asked the Victorian Government to trial a direct rail link between Geelong and Werribee. The proposal would reroute existing Warrnambool to Melbourne services through Werribee rather than Wyndham Vale. The councils say the tracks remain active for freight and are maintained. They argue the trial would test demand without waiting for major new construction. Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj and Wyndham Mayor Mia Shaw backed the plan, which is a request for a trial that the councils are seeking the state government to support.

Falling Melb house prices fail to help buyers as mortgage rates bite

Couples looking for a median-priced Melbourne house now have 146 suburbs to choose from, down from 210 in October 2025, according to Canstar. Canstar research manager Josh Sale said higher interest rates have weakened the link between falling prices and affordability. The income needed to buy the median Melbourne house rose from $135,268 to $139,362 over the year, even as the median price fell. Buyers' agent Zac Jacobs said buyers are likely to be very conservative while uncertainty about future rate rises remains. The most affordable Melbourne suburb is Melton, with a median house value of $570,000.

Could a simple reroute bring back trains between Geelong and Werribee?

Geelong and Wyndham councils are urging the state government to trial direct passenger trains between Geelong and Werribee. The proposal would reroute existing Warrnambool services through Werribee instead of Wyndham Vale, using current tracks, trains, and crews. The councils say the trial would require only timetable changes and passenger information, with no new track needed. They argue the service would improve access to jobs, education, and healthcare, while providing evidence for future investment.
