NT child protection report shows DV was major risk to Kumanjayi Little Baby

A Northern Territory review into child protection found that domestic violence by the girl's father was the biggest risk to five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby. The Department of Children and Families recorded 14 notifications linked to family violence since 2020, five of them in the weeks before her death. The review made 45 recommendations, which the government has accepted. Sector representatives said the recommendations were similar to earlier ones. Experts warned that treating family violence as a child protection issue could lead to victims losing their children.

Review of system that failed Kumanjayi Little Baby falls short, advocates say

A review into the Northern Territory's child protection system, following the death of five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby, has been criticised by advocates for not adequately incorporating Indigenous voices. Co-authors Karen Webb and Greg Shanahan expressed confidence in the implementation of most recommendations within six months. The North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency and other stakeholders have called for greater government accountability and engagement with Indigenous perspectives.

The results of Australia’s first national study of LGBTQIA+ families are here

Rainbow Families Australia has published Thriving Families, Unequal Burdens, a national study of LGBTQIA+ families based on a survey run between November 2025 and March 2026. Most families described their home lives positively, with high rates of reported happiness, strong extended family contact and stable housing. However, a smaller group faced greater stress, and more than one in three reported exclusion, bullying or discrimination, particularly outside major cities. Health services, including maternity and IVF care, were identified as areas where many families felt excluded.

Facebook is giving users more control over their algorithm

Meta has introduced an AI-powered tool called "Your Algorithm" on Facebook, letting users shape what appears in their Feed and Reels. Users can describe their preferences in their own words, and changes are said to appear in recommendations in real time. The platform's three-dot menu has also been updated, with options to mark posts as "Interested" or "Not interested". Meta says Facebook may ask follow-up questions to refine its understanding of user tastes. The feature follows a similar launch on Instagram and mirrors Threads' "Dear Algo" tool, reflecting a broader move towards giving people more say over recommendations.

Conflicts of interest most common corruption red flag

Conflicts of interest and declarable associations were the most common corruption red flags identified by Victoria's Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) in a new report. Of 260 recommendations made between 2014 and 2025, 77 related to managing conflicts between public duties and private interests. Local government and corrections sectors received the most recommendations, with 40 and 34 respectively. IBAC Deputy Commissioner Stephen Farrow said making recommendations public increases accountability and allows other agencies to learn from them.
