The mystery illness that has put this Brookvale couple’s life on hold

Fernando Rezende Silveira, 44, has been unable to get a clear diagnosis for more than a year, despite tests by doctors in Australia and overseas. His condition has left him largely reliant on a wheelchair and has stopped the couple's dancing and travel. Doctors have given a provisional diagnosis of seronegative autoimmune encephalitis, but treatment was stopped when he did not respond. Samples have been sent to the United States for testing. His wife, Fernanda De Almeida Santos Cordeiro, has left her job to become his full-time carer.

The 1906 omnibus: First stop, Beaches

The first private use of motorised buses in NSW started on the Northern Beaches in 1906. The Manly-Pittwater Motor Omnibus Company began running two Aster-Wembley buses from the Pier Hotel in Manly on 8 February 1906. The buses travelled to George Brock's mansion at Mona Vale. By May 1906 the service ran to Narrabeen and was extended to Rock Lily and Bayview. Brock's planned resort collapsed when a railway line did not reach Pittwater. The company was wound up voluntarily in July 1908.

A $75 million sale of a Point Piper waterfront home has become the highest price achieved in Sydney this year. Valuer Simon Feilich, who compiles the Dyson Austen Top 10 Prestige Residential Survey, says the market is recovering after a pause. Half of the top 10 sales for the third quarter took place in September. However, the cumulative value of the top 10 sales fell 16 per cent on the same quarter last year, from $400 million to $341.8 million. The entry point to the top 10 also dropped 22 per cent, to $23.5 million.
