Medowie Rugby Club stalwart Sam Holbert honoured with life membership

Medowie Rugby Club has granted life membership to Sam Holbert, its longest-serving player with more than 250 games. Holbert has played only for the Marauders, from juniors through to the senior ranks in Hunter Suburban Rugby competitions. He has also served as club president for the past three seasons and has now stepped down, handing the role to Jake Lightbody. Holbert is set to play again in 2027 under coaches Hayden Thompson and John McManus.

Campaigner sets 10,000-signature target for Pacific Highway safety petition

Close to 7,000 signatures have been collected in a renewed push to improve safety at two Pacific Highway intersections, with Bucketts Way and Medowie Road. Petition organiser Leah Veksins says the petition will stay open until it reaches 10,000 signatures. She describes it as the fourth petition seeking improvements, after earlier efforts in 1995, 2005 and 2015. While an overpass is among her preferred options, she is also open to traffic lights or stop controls. The petition asks governments and road authorities to work together on a redesign of both junctions.

Residents invited to help form a Medowie Landcare group

Residents of Medowie are being invited to help form a Landcare group to protect the bushland around the suburb. Organiser Dee Murdoch says growth in the area makes protecting natural spaces more important. An initial meeting is planned for Sunday, 18 October at 3pm to gauge interest and discuss forming a group under the Hunter Region Landcare Network. Possible early work includes weed control, rubbish clean-ups, and planting native vegetation for wildlife such as koalas and yellow-tailed black cockatoos.
