Stocks, bonds cautious before big week for risk

Global shares edged up on Monday as oil prices eased from six-month highs, ahead of a week of central bank meetings and corporate earnings. Oil fell about two per cent to $US114.60 after reports that Qatari mediators were in Tehran in an effort to ease tensions. The Houthi group in Yemen said it had attacked Saudi Arabia's East-West crude oil pumping stations and Riyadh airport, though Riyadh did not immediately confirm this. Markets expect the US Federal Reserve to hold rates steady this month but price in a likely rate rise in December.

American-born economists Robert E Hall and Michael Woodford have won the Nobel memorial prize in economics. Their work on the micro-economic foundations of macro-economic stabilisation has provided a stable theoretical foundation for models now used by central banks and governments worldwide. Hall, 83, is a professor at Stanford University, while Woodford, 71, teaches at Columbia University in New York. The prize was announced in Stockholm by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Each laureate will receive around $900,000.

Americans Hall and Woodford win Nobel economics prize

US academics Robert Hall and Michael Woodford have won the 2026 Nobel economics prize. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said the pair won for microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilisation. Their models help governments and central banks respond to shocks such as energy crises and sudden shifts in household spending. The prize is worth 12 million Swedish crowns, about $A1.7 million, and is the last prize announced this year. The economics prize was first awarded in 1969 and was established by Sweden's central bank rather than by Alfred Nobel's will.
