Politicians are going viral with Gen Z. But is anyone actually changing their vote?

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has appeared in a comedy video for online duo Swag On The Beat, joking that he would reinstate his HECS debt if a boyfriend hurt his daughter. Griffith University communication expert Dr Susan Grantham says such projects help politicians appear authentic and reach people they would otherwise miss. A study she led of 564 political creator posts before the 2025 federal election found creators shared four times more election content than regular media. Focus group participants did not say these posts changed how they voted.

Young Indonesians say they feel 'complicit' in voting for Prabowo

Young voters who helped elect Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto are increasingly disappointed with his government. Some say they feel complicit in backing him. Critics point to a free school meals program that has left thousands of recipients ill, and to a weakened rupiah. Protests have also erupted over the government's response to forest fires on Sumatra and Kalimantan. The government says it is evaluating policies and achieving results, and Mr Prabowo says he is proud of what has been delivered in two years.

Commissioner throws cold water on disinformation fears

Victoria's Electoral Commissioner Sven Bluemmel says young people are good at judging media and are not the biggest worry over online disinformation ahead of the state election on November 28. He told a Monash University forum that most voters aged 18 to 24 get their news from social media, with about half citing TikTok. About 75,000 people will vote for the first time in an election with 4.7 million registered voters.
