Crossing contracts awarded

A contract has been awarded to remove boom gates at two inner-west Melbourne level crossings. The alliance of Acciona, WSP, Metro Trains Melbourne and VIDA Rail will carry out work at Anderson Street in Yarraville and Hudsons Road in Spotswood. The state government says the Anderson Street crossing has seen one fatality and four serious injuries since 2006. The Yarraville project will close the western part of Anderson Street to traffic, create a pedestrian plaza and add parking. Construction starts next year, with completion due in 2029. The Hudsons Road crossing is expected to be removed by 2028.

People power in suburbs exposes fragility of AI boom

NEXTDC shares fell 42 per cent in a single day after the company said delays in getting power to its inner-west Melbourne data centre expansion would cut its future earnings by a third. The delays followed residents in Yarraville blocking power company Jemena's crews from working in Sanderson Street, forcing them to abandon the holes they had dug. Separately, the planned listing of AI data centre company Firmus, valued at about $44 billion, fell apart after large investors refused to pay $11 a share.

Data centre developer's shares crash after backlash

Shares of NextDC, Australia's largest listed data centre developer, fell 40.2 per cent to an eight-year low of $5.48 in early trading on Wednesday. The company said community opposition led power operator Jemena to suspend electricity grid work at its M3 data centre in West Footscray. Jemena has told NextDC it does not intend to resume work before February. NextDC has removed the affected M3 contracts from its 2026/27 earnings guidance and plans to cut capital expenditure by $750 million.

Moonee Ponds vendors reduce price hopes to sell $2,817,500 renovated home

A renovated five-bedroom home in Moonee Ponds sold for $2,817,500 after it passed in at auction on Saturday. The vendors, who are moving to Queensland, cut their price hopes. In Yarraville, a converted shopfront home sold for $1,265,000 after drawing three bidders. In Kingsville, a renovated cottage sold for $1.34 million in post-auction negotiations. Agents say renovated homes in good locations are still transacting well, while unrenovated stock is struggling more.
