Thinking of ewe during record low

Rabobank says Australia's sheep industry is at an important turning point, with the flock close to record lows and limited growth expected over the next five years. The bank's research says future production growth will need to come from productivity improvements. Global demand for Australian sheepmeat and wool remains strong, while major competitors are not expected to expand supply significantly. RaboResearch senior animal proteins analyst Angus Gidley-Baird said high restocking costs and labour challenges are holding back flock rebuilding, though modelling suggests the breeding flock could rise about six per cent between 2026 and 2030.

The amazing story of the ‘Yeti’ from Kangaroo Island, South Australia

A sheep nicknamed the Kangaroo Island yeti has been caught and shorn after roaming the scrub for years. Kirsty Wade first spotted the animal in 2023 on a fire trail on the island's western end. Shearer Dean removed 31 kilograms of wool from the ewe on Saturday the 24th. A yellow ear tag identified her as belonging to farmer Graham, who lost most of his flock in the January 2020 fires. The vet said she was underweight but healthy, and she is now back on Graham's property.
