Embattled AI company Firmus still wants funds for Tasmanian data centre

Firmus Technologies says one of its three planned AI data centres in Tasmania's north is not yet funded. The company abandoned its plan to list on the Australian stock exchange earlier this month but is continuing with its Tasmanian projects. Firmus general energy manager Paul Grzinic told a parliamentary committee that the Launceston and Wesley Vale stage one sites are fully funded. He said the other sites still need development approval, which he described as a key step towards securing funding.

Landholders and politicians push for tougher laws on renewable energy developments

A coalition of rural community groups is demanding tougher laws on renewable energy developments. Regional Voices Queensland, an alliance of about 12 community action groups, met at a farm beside the Wambo Wind Farm at Diamondy. The group wants a minimum 3-kilometre setback from residences and up-front decommissioning bonds. Landholders say they want practical safeguards rather than opposition to renewable energy. Protections for neighbouring producers against contamination and impacts on agricultural accreditation are also being sought.

SA might miss its renewables target, but does it matter?

South Australian Energy Minister Tom Koutsantonis has hinted the state may not reach its 100 per cent net renewable energy target by 2027. He said the ambition matters most, and that reaching the target in 2028 would still be a significant achievement. Renewables generated 77.1 per cent of the state's net electricity last year. Experts say the final stretch will be harder, needing storage, transmission and backup capacity. The government has also opted out of a national scheme that could have discouraged new home gas connections.
