Free Children's Week events will be held in Torquay and Winchelsea next week, giving families activities, crafts and entertainment. The Surf Coast Shire and local early years services are hosting the events. In Torquay, activities run at Elephant Walk on Tuesday 27 October from 10am to noon, including a Science Kidz show. In Winchelsea, families can join nature play and science experiments at Riverbank Playground on Thursday 29 October from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. Children's Week runs nationally from 24 October to 1 November.
Winchelsea Pool will open its new season on Saturday 28 November, run by new management partner Belgravia Leisure. Recreational and lap swimming, exercise classes, VICSWIM lessons, school carnivals and community events will be offered. The pool will open from noon to 6pm daily, subject to weather, and season passes go on sale online from 9 November. The last day of the summer season is Monday 8 March 2027. Surf Coast Shire Council says the pool recorded record attendance in the 2025-26 season.
Surf Coast Shire Council is asking residents to help shape a Structure Plan that will guide how Winchelsea grows and changes over the next 15 years. The plan will draw on the recently completed Winchelsea Place Plan, which sets out what residents value most and want to protect. Deputy Mayor Tony Phelps said the first phase of community engagement is open. People can complete a 10-minute survey online, mark issues or priorities on an interactive map, or attend drop-in sessions held on 25 October, 31 October and 1 November.

In 1859, pastoralist Thomas Austin released around two dozen wild and domestic rabbits on his estate near Geelong. The animals spread across the continent and grew to plague proportions, damaging pastures and threatening more than 300 native species. Biocontrol viruses, first released by CSIRO scientists in the 1950s, have helped cut numbers, but resistance has developed. Sharp rises in rabbit numbers have recently been reported. Researchers are now developing new virus variants and studying longer-term options, with control methods combined for lasting results.
