ORRCA raises funds for rescue drone to help marine mammals off Port Stephens

ORRCA's Port Stephens and Newcastle pod is asking the community to help fund a drone. The pod hopes to raise about $4,000. Volunteers say the drone would help them keep entangled whales in sight until rescue teams arrive, and check injured dolphins, seals and whales. The appeal has received $1,000 so far, including $500 each from Soldiers Point Bowling Club and Tilligerry Peninsula Lions Club. Anyone who sees a stranded, injured or entangled marine mammal is urged to call ORRCA's 24-hour hotline rather than attempt a rescue.

Could a whale really swallow a human? A marine scientist says yes

Marine scientist Vanessa Pirotta has weighed in on whether a human could be swallowed by a whale, as raised by the thriller Whalefall. She says a sperm whale could potentially take a person into its mouth and throat, since it feeds by grabbing prey with its teeth rather than chewing. However, she says sperm whales feed at great depths, so the film's scenario is unlikely. She also says whales are not known to target humans and would probably spit out a diver quickly.

Second-longest whale photographed in rare sighting off WA's coast

Two rare fin whales have been photographed in Geographe Bay, 220 kilometres south of Perth. The sightings, described as 'incredibly unusual', were unusually close to shore. Researchers say fin whale populations are still recovering from 20th-century whaling, which killed about 700,000 of the species. The whales were spotted by a drone pilot who initially thought he was filming a small blue whale.
