UK looking to give carmakers incentives to turn EVs into ‘power plants on wheels’

UK ministers are considering giving carmakers incentives to fit electric cars with vehicle to grid technology, which lets cars sell stored power back to the grid at peak times. The plans are part of a review of the zero-emission vehicle mandate. Campaign groups warn the credits could let carmakers sell more petrol models and raise emissions. Industry figures say the benefits should go to drivers, not manufacturers, as the technology is not yet widely used. The grid operator forecasts such cars could supply up to 41 gigawatts by 2050.

Multimillion-dollar bid to make electric fleets pay up

A three-year trial of up to 130 electric vehicles will test whether their batteries can ease pressure on the electricity grid and earn money while parked. The Australian Renewable Energy Agency announced the $5.35 million project with Jet Charge, AGL and the ACT government. It is set to be Australia's biggest commercial deployment of vehicle-to-grid technology, which sends power from car batteries back into the grid during high demand. Many of the vehicles are used for in-home health services during the day and can be connected to the grid overnight.
