Extended pharmacy trial offers cheaper and easier access to the pill, UTI treatments

All women will soon be able to get the pill and treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections from pharmacies at lower cost. The federal government has widened a 12-month trial that was first announced for concession card holders only. The trial is expected to start early next year. The government will cover up to $38 for a pharmacist consultation, and women will pay no more than $25 per script. Health Minister Mark Butler said the change would improve access and affordability. The Pharmacy Guild of Australia welcomed the move, while doctors raised concerns about possible misdiagnoses.

Bladder cancer mistaken for UTI, perimenopause in women

Andrea Harris waited four years from her first GP visit for a suspected bladder infection to a diagnosis of advanced bladder cancer in March 2024. Experts say women with bladder cancer often present later than men, because their symptoms are easily mistaken for urinary tract infections or perimenopause. Five-year survival for women diagnosed in Australia is about 50 per cent, compared with almost 60 per cent for men. Specialists urge greater community awareness, closer investigation of women with recurrent infection-like symptoms, and referral to a urologist. Survivors say patients should push for answers when something does not feel right.
