University of Technology Sydney told to apologise to Jewish students

An ombudsman report has found the University of Technology Sydney alienated Jewish students and must issue several apologies over how it handled complaints tied to a campus event. The National Student Ombudsman's report makes seven recommendations, including apologies to students who complained about a pro-Palestine rally and to the Australasian Union of Jewish Students for an incorrect external review finding. The Executive Council of Australian Jewry said the university needed real change, not just apologies. UTS vice-chancellor Andrew Parfitt accepted that individual complaints were poorly handled and said the university had zero tolerance for anti-Semitism.

UTS further marginalised Jewish students with complaints handling, report finds

The University of Technology Sydney mishandled complaints made by Jewish students after an on-campus pro-Palestine protest, according to the National Student Ombudsman. The ombudsman has made seven recommendations to the university, including that it apologise to the students and review its on-campus protest policy. Two students received no response to their complaints, which breached the university's own policy, while others received a generic reply. The university said it had apologised and accepted its handling was inadequate.

Uni 'let Jewish students down' after pro-Palestine demo

The National Student Ombudsman has found the University of Technology Sydney failed to properly handle complaints from Jewish students after a pro-Palestine rally. Some students received no response, while others got generic replies. The ombudsman also found the university wrongly named the Australasian Union of Jewish Students in its review recommendations, damaging the group's reputation. Education Minister Jason Clare said the university had let Jewish students down and that universities must take complaints of racism seriously.

Adelaide University to offer staff early retirements as financial woes grow

Adelaide University is offering staff over 55 with five or more years of service the chance to apply for an early retirement scheme. The university says the scheme is voluntary and is not a redundancy process, though redundancies may be considered in future. It faces a projected revenue shortfall of around $90 million, which it links to falling international student enrolments and federal government policy changes. The university says it is not considering compulsory redundancies before the employment guarantee expires in mid-2027. Expressions of interest close on October 27.

Update from the Greek Studies Program at La Trobe University (October 2026)

La Trobe University will reinstate its upper level Advanced Greek Major for three years, under a joint funding arrangement with the Pharos Alliance. The program's coordinator says a university-wide restructure removed subjects across all languages, not Greek alone. Greek remains the only language of its kind offered at a Victorian university, and student numbers have held steady. The program is now developing a long-term plan, and will host an international Modern Greek Studies conference in February 2027.

Universities justified job cuts with numbers no-one could check

A NSW parliamentary inquiry has found the University of Wollongong and five other universities appeared to overstate their financial problems and went too far in restructures and staff cuts. Former UOW professor Adam Lucas accepted a voluntary redundancy after challenging the figures used to justify his role's removal. He said the financial model was never shown to staff for testing. Inquiry chair Sarah Kaine described some financial cases as faux crisis narratives. The committee recommended banning universities from publicly using adjusted figures that differ from audited accounts.
