More trees for Sunbury

Sunbury will get more shade as the Victorian state government invests $3 million in 23 greening projects across two programs. The first program will plant more than 100,000 trees across 13 projects, with $1.5 million directed to suburbs with less tree cover and greater heat exposure. Planting will take place across Melbourne's west and south-east, including 15,000 trees along the Maribyrnong River. The second program will give 10 busy shopping strips and streets a green makeover, including St Albans, Sunshine West, Brunswick and Melbourne's CBD.

Fraser Coast Regional Council will plant a New Zealand native totara tree in Queens Park, Maryborough, on Friday 13 November at 10am to mark 100 years since Mary Poppins first appeared in print. The story, written by Maryborough-born author P.L. Travers, was first published in The Sun in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1926. A morning tea garden party and anniversary cake will follow at Story Bank from 10:45am. Visitors are invited to dress as their favourite Mary Poppins character, with free entry throughout the day and a new exhibition, Mary Poppins the Winds of Change, on display.

New trees take root in Fremantle’s West End

New trees have been planted near 30 and 34 Marine Terrace in Fremantle's West End, adding greenery and future shade to a highly urbanised area. The City of Fremantle worked with the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage to choose suitable locations and tree species that suit the heritage setting. Purpose-designed tree pits capture stormwater, which helps water the trees and improves drainage in the area. The City's Urban Forest team will maintain the trees and shape their growth to protect heritage sightlines. The planting supports the City's Urban Forest Plan, which aims to increase tree canopy.
