Albion Primary School celebrates 100 years

Albion Primary School marked 100 years since it first opened in 1926 with a celebration on 17 October. Past students, former staff, families and community members attended to reflect on the school's history. Historical photographs were displayed, and the Norwood Street Band, Sunshine College Band and Victoria University Secondary College Band performed. The day included the opening of a time capsule from the school's 50th celebrations, and a new capsule was buried to be opened in 2076. Principal Adrienne Williamson said a school is defined by its people, stories and memories.

A glimpse into 50 years of wheat disease evolution

Two vials of Septoria tritici, a fungus that damages wheat, were opened on Saturday 17 October after 50 years in a 1976 time capsule at Roseworthy. Scientists at the South Australian Research and Development Institute will test whether the fungus can still grow. They will also compare its virulence with modern samples. The disease thrives in cool, wet conditions and can cut yields by up to 50 per cent in high-rainfall areas. Researchers hope the results will guide future disease management in wheat production.
