Whale carcass washes ashore for third time, another Sydney beach closed

A whale calf carcass has washed ashore at Malabar Beach in Sydney, the third landing spot for the same animal. Randwick Council workers moved the remains up the sand, roped off the area and closed the beach on Tuesday. Council said strong currents moved the carcass from Lurline Bay and that it will be removed and disposed of on Tuesday 27 October. Earlier, Coogee and Maroubra beaches were shut after the carcass became stuck against rocks at Lurline Bay.

Illawarra’s special entertainment precincts step closer to creating vibrant and activated towns

Kiama council is progressing plans for a two-year trial of a special entertainment precinct, which could start by early next year. The precinct aims to boost live music, hospitality and the night-time economy through more flexible sound limits, longer trading hours and less red tape. Some critics say the proposal lacks ambition and want higher sound limits for longer periods. Councillors voted to progress the draft as originally recommended, with a month-long public exhibition still to come. Wollongong council is also investigating whether a similar precinct would suit its city centre.

‘Almost looks fake’: two Sydney beaches closed after whale carcass washes up

Two busy Sydney beaches, Coogee and Maroubra, have been closed until further notice after a decomposing whale carcass washed up at nearby Lurline Bay. Randwick Council said the closure protects swimmers and surfers, as whale carcasses can attract sharks. Council has no plans to remove the animal. Staff are working with the Gamay Rangers on a culturally sensitive approach, and the carcass is believed to be a juvenile humpback. Residents are asked to avoid the area and follow directions from lifeguards and authorities.

Maroubra & Coogee Beach Closed Due To Whale Carcass

Randwick City Council has closed Maroubra and Coogee beaches after a whale carcass washed up on rocks between them. The carcass lies at Lurline Bay, just over two kilometres from either beach. Council is working with the Gamay Rangers and the NSW Department of Primary Industries. The carcass will stay in place for now, as discussions continue about a culturally and environmentally sensitive approach. Council is also considering closing the surrounding rock shelf walkway. Council urges people to avoid swimming at both beaches, as carcasses can attract sharks.

Eastern Sydney beaches close after whale carcass washes up

Beaches at Coogee and Maroubra in Sydney's east have been closed to swimmers after a whale carcass was spotted floating against the coastline. The dead whale, suspected to be a young humpback, was seen at Lurline Bay on Thursday morning. Randwick Council says the beaches will stay closed until further notice while the whale is removed. Whale scientist Vanessa Pirotta says the animal is likely a young adult or teenaged humpback and has advised against swimming in the area.

Tap water no longer drinkable in Norwegian village as climate-related thawing releases heavy metals

Residents of Longyearbyen, a village in Norway's Svalbard archipelago, have been told not to drink tap water due to heavy metal contamination linked to thawing permafrost. The contamination, including manganese, sulphate, and nickel, exceeds safe levels and is caused by the oxidation of pyrite in the bedrock. The mayor has commissioned an investigation and is considering expensive solutions like filtration systems or a desalination plant.

City Of Sydney Seeking Community Feedback On New Special Entertainment Precincts

The City of Sydney is seeking public feedback on proposed special entertainment precincts across the city. The plans would support live music, performance and dining venues into the night. Councils could set tailored sound management and trading hours, and eligible venues could get extended trading hours and liquor licence fee discounts. Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the precincts aim to keep Sydney a global city while protecting residents' quality of life. The plans are open for comment until 26 November, after which they will return to Council for final endorsement.

How to Build the Ultimate Bar Cart: Essential Spirits, Tools, and Mixers

Building a home bar cart starts with a few favourite bottles, then adds the six core spirits: gin, vodka, tequila, white rum, bourbon or rye, and aged whisky. Modifiers such as sweet and dry vermouth, Cointreau, Campari or Aperol and Angostura bitters add depth to classic cocktails. Fresh citrus, homemade simple syrup, carbonated mixers and quality ice complete the setup. Essential tools include a shaker, jigger, mixing glass, strainers, a juicer and a muddler. Placing the cart away from direct sunlight, and storing opened vermouth in the fridge, helps keep drinks in good condition.
