France probes possible terrorist shooting of girl

A gunman opened fire from a car in Trappes, west of Paris, killing one person and wounding four others, including a 12-year-old girl. President Emmanuel Macron called the Friday shooting a terrorist and racist attack. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said it was clearly a terrorist crime, though investigations are ongoing. Officials say the 39-year-old suspect drove through the town firing at a petrol station, a medical centre and a children's playground. Police arrested him before he could injure anyone else. The anti-terrorism prosecutor's office is examining whether the attack was racially or religiously motivated.

AFP warns Australia of ‘tsunami of youth crime’ and radicalisation accelerated by AI

The Australian Federal Police have warned of a tsunami of youth crime, with artificial intelligence speeding up radicalisation. Acting deputy commissioner Sandra Booth told a parliamentary inquiry that the process, once taking years or months, can now happen within days. She warned that mental health, education and justice systems could be overwhelmed without serious action. Police allege a 13-year-old boy in Australia possessed violent extremist material and plans for a school shooting. Since 2020, 65 children, some as young as 12, have been subject to federal police operations. A final report is due in March next year.

An 18-year-old man has pleaded guilty in the ACT Supreme Court to two terrorism-related charges. He admitted planning a white supremacy-inspired attack in Canberra that could have caused injuries or death. He was 17 when arrested in November 2025, so he cannot be named. Police allege they found materials to make chlorine gas, gas masks and military-style clothing in his bedroom. He admitted collecting equipment to make gases for an attack. He will be sentenced after the court sets a date, which is expected in the first half of 2027.

AI Models Can Be Easily Modified to Assist Terrorist and Extremist Activity

A UK nonprofit, Tech Against Terrorism, has found that many AI models answer requests linked to terrorism. Its Counter-Terrorism AI Benchmark tested 134 models with more than 200 prompts, and 81 failed. Abliterated versions, with guardrails removed, are now published online in under three days on average, compared with more than 24 days in 2024. Researchers said one abliterated open-weight model gave a 15-step guide to building an explosive device. Companies including Meta, Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI and Alibaba did not respond to requests for comment.

'Never attended': mosque rejects accused hijacker link

The founding leader of a Melbourne mosque says the accused attempted hijacker of a flydubai flight has never attended the centre. United Arab Emirates authorities claim pilot Hamam al-Hammami was radicalised there, a claim Samir Mohtadi calls false and misleading. Al-Hammami is accused of trying to seize control of a plane bound for Tel Aviv on September 30. Mohtadi says the claims could damage the reputation of a charity that has served the community for decades. The Australian Federal Police confirmed a Victorian counter terrorism team is investigating the pilot's potential domestic connections.
