Tax office complaints surge during crack down on debts

Complaints about the Australian Taxation Office have risen sharply as the agency ramps up debt collection. The Tax Ombudsman received 2376 complaints in the six months to September, up 74 per cent on the same period last year. The office said it received 1358 complaints over that period, because the ombudsman's figures also included matters not involving the tax office. The ombudsman found the tax office acted reasonably in 63 per cent of debt collection complaints it investigated. Outstanding tax debt stood at $54.2 billion in 2024/25, with $35.9 billion owed by small businesses.

Lauryn Hill’s debt that cost her millions, homes

Lauryn Hill, a former member of the Fugees, faced foreclosure on her New Jersey home in 2018 over nearly $1 million in unpaid property taxes. In 2012 she was charged after failing to file federal tax returns on income earned between 2005 and 2007. She was later jailed for three months after paying nearly $970,000 in back taxes. The New Jersey Division of Taxation has since placed two tax liens on her totalling more than $892,000. Her estimated net worth is now $500,000, and she still earns through tours and festival appearances.
