Perth traffic: Rollover on Tonkin Highway, crash on Mitchell Freeway causing peak hour chaos

A rollover has reduced Tonkin Highway to a single lane in Kewdale, slowing commuters heading home for the weekend. Main Roads has urged drivers to take extreme care in the area. Further north, a crash has blocked a lane on Mitchell Freeway in Tamala Park, with heavy traffic building on approach. A separate crash blocked the left lane of Kwinana Freeway at South Street in Bateman, scattering debris across the road. That crash has since been cleared.

Land near Tamala Park tip rezoned for housing despite Department of Health objections

The WA Planning Commission has voted to lift planning restrictions on land in Clarkson, despite the Department of Health opposing the move over its closeness to the Tamala Park landfill. Part of the 1810 square metre site sits within the tip's 500 metre buffer zone. Planning officers said contamination risks were manageable and acceptable, and that the buffer may no longer apply once homes are built, as the landfill is scheduled to close in 2029. The City of Wanneroo supported the rezoning with conditions, including that future buyers be told of the site's history and risks.

Household rubbish from thousands of Perth properties to be redirected to Kwinana Energy Recovery

Household rubbish from thousands of properties in Perth's northern and central suburbs will be sent to Kwinana for energy recovery. The City of Stirling was the first of five metropolitan council areas to redirect its waste south. Kwinana Energy Recovery uses thermal treatment to extract energy and recoverable materials from non-recyclable waste. In coming months, rubbish from up to 160,000 homes in four more council areas will follow. The Tamala Park tip will continue to serve Joondalup and Wanneroo until it closes in 2029.
