The Queensland Police Service opens its statement by acknowledging First Nations peoples, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, as Traditional Owners of lands across Australia and their connection to country and community. It pays respect to Traditional Owners and their Elders, past, present and emerging, and to the ancestors of this land and their legacy. The statement says these ancestors laid foundations that give strength, inspiration and courage to current and future generations, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous. The acknowledgement is presented as a formal opening and does not describe the fire itself.
