Firearms licence holders in NSW can now book through the Gun Safe portal to surrender eligible guns and ammunition for compensation. The scheme officially starts on 2 November and is expected to see up to 274,000 firearms returned in the state. It follows the Bondi Beach terror attack earlier this year, in which 15 people were killed. Only Sutherland and Penrith police stations take bookings in the first phase, with more stations opening later in November and in 2027. Police Minister Yasmin Catley said fewer guns in the community mean a safer community.

The home, last sold in 1994 for $295,000, attracted strong interest due to its unrenovated state and prime location. The median property value in Surry Hills has fallen 11.2 per cent in the last year.

One victim told the NSW District Court she had lived in constant fear since being attacked in Surry Hills in 1992. Cameron said he had committed heinous crimes and did not have the courage to face police earlier. Cameron will be sentenced in December.

Councils could set tailored sound management and trading hours, and eligible venues could get extended trading hours and liquor licence fee discounts. Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the precincts aim to keep Sydney a global city while protecting residents' quality of life. The plans are open for comment until 26 November, after which they will return to Council for final endorsement.

Renters in Sydney are facing a tough market, with desirable properties leased within minutes of being listed. Domain's September quarter Rent Report shows vacancy rates have eased slightly to 1.2 per cent, the highest since September 2021, but the market remains very tight. Sydney rents overall are still at record highs, with 441 suburbs recording increases. Abbotsford recorded the largest rise in house rents, up 47.2 per cent in the year to September. Economists expect rents to keep rising as fewer investors remain in the market and interest rate rises add pressure.
