Sunscreen to require multiple tests in Australia in wake of SPF scandal
Australian sunscreen brands would have to test their products' SPF several times and give the results to the regulator before going on sale, under proposed rules. The Therapeutic Goods Administration put the changes forward after Choice testing found 16 of 20 popular sunscreens failed to meet their SPF labels last year. Brands would test finished products rather than just the base formula, and would keep testing over shelf life. The TGA also proposes allowing a plate-based testing method alongside human-volunteer testing, and tighter accreditation of testing laboratories.
