Eagles day out

Sunshine Eagles recorded their second win of the Baseball Victoria summer league premier 1 first nine competition on Saturday, beating Werribee Giants 18-0 in five innings. Coach Stuart Clayton said the team batted well, and Jamie Young pitched a one-hitter. Lincoln Grech, aged 17, made his first top-grade appearance for the club as an emergency catcher while the import catcher was still overseas, and recorded a couple of hits. The Eagles face Williamstown Wolves on Tuesday and Cheltenham on Saturday. The women's regional west side lost 23-9 to Fitzroy.

Giants focus on youth

The Werribee Giants are focusing on youth this summer in the Baseball Victoria premier 1 first nine competition. Nearly half the squad is under 18, and new coach Jimmy Bent says the club wants to give its younger players a chance at the top level. The team lost 13-2 to Essendon on Saturday, but Bent says he has seen improvement between rounds. Former Australian player Bronwyn Gell became the first woman to play for the Giants in the premier competition in round two. She is the club's women's coach this season.
