Hargrave’s flying legacy to soar with new event and kite re-enactment

Two events in the Illawarra will celebrate aviation pioneer Lawrence Hargrave. On 14 November, a re-enactment of his 1894 box kite experiment will be held at Stanwell Park Beach at 11 am. Using replicas of the four kites, organisers will attempt to lift a person to the height Hargrave reached, about 4.9 metres. On 28 November, the inaugural Lawrence Hargrave Oration will be delivered by Bob De La Hunty at Corrimal RSL Club from 6:30 pm. Tickets are on sale now.

CWA marks 80th branch birthday

The Stanwell Park CWA celebrated its 80th birthday at its branch this year. The branch held its CWA International Day with Fiji as the country of study. Year 2 pupils from Stanwell Park Public School performed a story about the arrival of the first people to the Fijian islands. A local Crime Prevention Squad presentation covered emergency contacts and scam and fraud warnings. Members were given a safety guide for older adults. The branch meets at its hall on the first Tuesday of each month at 10am.
