City Hall to light up as Geelong rallies behind Helen Haines

A candlelight vigil will be held at Johnston Park in Geelong at 8pm on Friday 23 October in support of independent MP Helen Haines. The event follows an alleged attack outside her electoral office in Wangaratta on Monday. City Hall will be lit up in solidarity. Her husband, Phil, said both of her legs were amputated but that she is in stable condition. City of Greater Geelong councillor Emma Sinclair said the vigil aims to highlight violence against women in public roles.

Unionists discuss defending the CFMEU against Victorian Labor’s assault

About 100 unionists and solidarity activists met on October 14 to discuss how to defend the Construction Forestry Mining and Employees Union. The meeting was organised by Defend the Unions – Defend the CFMEU. Speakers said the Retail and Fast Food Workers Union helped defeat a federal Labor bill that would have disbanded it. Former CFMEU official Nigel Davies criticised police dawn raids and the union administration's legal support criteria. Speakers urged members to stick together and take collective action to rebuild solidarity before the Victorian elections.
