Warning after red-bellied black snake climbs out of Aussie family’s toilet

A red-bellied black snake entered a family's home in Rossmore, in southwest Sydney, by climbing through a sewerage pipe and into the toilet. The family called snake catcher Daniel May, who said the snake was about 1.5 metres long and appeared to have been badly weakened by its journey. May took the snake into his care until it recovered, and planned to release it. He said snake activity is rising as temperatures warm, with reptiles coming out of winter and seeking mates. He advised families to keep yards clean and pets inside, and to stay calm around snakes.

‘Chunky and strong’: Snake emerges from family’s toilet

A red-bellied black snake came up through a toilet at a home in Rossmore, in Sydney's southwest, on Monday. Narellan Snake Catcher Daniel May was called to remove the roughly 1.5-metre snake. May said it had likely travelled through a sewer line before entering the bowl. He said he had never before dealt with a snake entering through a toilet. Rising spring temperatures are bringing snakes out of hibernation, and May urged households to keep yards tidy and to stay calm if a snake is spotted.

Reptilian Encounter captures rare moment

Retired photographer Richard Swansborough has been named a finalist in the Mono Awards for his photograph Reptilian Encounter. The image was taken on his Canowindra property and shows a Cunningham skink appearing to defend its young from an Eastern Brown snake. Swansborough believes it may be the first documented case of this behaviour. He said he keeps about 25 to 30 of the skinks on his land and has seen them confront brown snakes before. The 83-year-old, who has worked in photography for six decades, said capturing the moment was pure chance.

‘Circle of life’: Perth woman captures moment carpet python snake devours unsuspecting parrot

A Perth resident witnessed a carpet python consuming a parrot in a tree along the Swan View Tunnel Trail in John Forrest National Park. Lucy Louise and her children observed the reptile, which had already ingested half the bird, continue its meal. Carpet pythons, common in Western Australia, are skilled climbers that often prey on birds near water sources. The family watched as the snake swallowed the parrot whole, a spectacle that left them in awe. This encounter highlights the natural predator-prey dynamics in the region's bushland.
