Outback mining jobs are on the rise with no workers to fill them

Mining companies in Queensland's North West Minerals Province are struggling to find workers as drilling ramps up and new jobs open. AIC Mines chairman Aaron Colleran said hiring has been difficult everywhere, including at its Eloise copper mine near Cloncurry. The Australian Resources and Energy Employer Association estimates the industry will need 24,000 new workers across the country by 2027. Queensland Resources Council figures point to competing skill needs and fewer young people entering trades and mining careers. Industry leaders say apprenticeships must grow to ease the shortage.

Northern Rivers businesses to benefit from $20 million skills investment

Small businesses across the Northern Rivers will benefit from a $20 million NSW Government training investment. The funding expands access to subsidised training for existing workers, aiming to address skills shortages and boost productivity. Apprenticeship and traineeship numbers in the region are nearing pre-flood levels, with more than 10,500 people starting training since the 2022 floods. NSW Minister for Skills Steve Whan and Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin said local employers played a key role in the recovery.
