Young riders lose makeshift jumps as calls grow for BMX park

The City of Greater Geelong has begun removing makeshift bike jumps in Armstrong Creek, citing safety and environmental concerns. Four jumps had been taken down by midday on Monday, and temporary fencing was installed around part of the site near Dooliebeal Reserve. City chief executive Ali Wastie said the jumps were in hard-to-reach areas, making access difficult for emergency responders. Local father Rhett Bardon described the children's efforts as resourceful and called for a dedicated bike park. A petition has been launched seeking a park closer to the growing suburb.

Our great heritage

Three Geelong-region projects were honoured at this year's Geelong Heritage Awards for preserving local history. Corio Skateboard Club was recognised for helping establish one of Australia's earliest skate parks, which opened in 1980 after two years of campaigning. The Bottleworks in Fitzroy Street, a former glass factory, now includes 78 apartments and 33 townhouses. The restored Barwon Heads Golf Club clubhouse, opened in 1924, was also recognised. The awards were held at the Nyaal Banyul Event and Convention Centre during Geelong Design Week.
