A rollover has reduced Tonkin Highway to a single lane in Kewdale, slowing commuters heading home for the weekend. Main Roads has urged drivers to take extreme care in the area. Further north, a crash has blocked a lane on Mitchell Freeway in Tamala Park, with heavy traffic building on approach. A separate crash blocked the left lane of Kwinana Freeway at South Street in Bateman, scattering debris across the road. That crash has since been cleared.
Defence has confirmed that a six-wheel Supacat transporter involved in a fatal rollover had tipped over in a previous training exercise. Corporal Brendan Hannam died and five soldiers were injured when their vehicle rolled at the Mount Bundey training area on October 5. Defence says a 2020 incident was a lay over rather than a rollover. A UK inquiry into a fatal Jackal rollover in 2019 made more than 50 recommendations on roll protection. Defence has paused Supacat operations and the Defence Minister has asked for a review of vehicle risk settings.
A man in his 50s has been airlifted to Lismore Base Hospital after a bulldozer rollover on a property near Bonalbo, New South Wales. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was sent to the property at 11.50pm on Saturday, October 17. The man was injured several hours earlier and was found by relatives after he failed to return home. Paramedics and the helicopter's critical care team treated him for leg and arm fractures.
