Sydney surgeon controls robot in Shanghai in glimpse of future cancer care
A Sydney surgeon has carried out a demonstration of cancer surgery in China without leaving Sydney. Associate Professor Ruban Thanigasalam used a console at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse to guide the Toumai robot as it cut and stitched a demonstration kidney in Shanghai. No patient was involved. Thanigasalam said the technology could let specialists in cities operate on patients in regional areas, so they could stay close to home. He said Australian hospitals still need further approvals, including medico-legal and indemnity clearances, before offering remote surgery.
