‘Ugly and barren’: Council’s tree cull sparks property fears

Residents of Risby Street in Ulverstone, Tasmania, are opposing a Central Coast Council plan to remove 25 historic elms this month as part of a road renewal project. Locals say the loss of the canopy could lower property values and make the street less attractive. A Ray White economist said tree-lined streets are generally seen as more desirable and can add value to nearby homes. Some residents, however, say the ageing trees cause problems. Council candidates have called for the works to wait until after the upcoming council elections, but the council says the project remains on schedule.

Renewal works begin in Torquay

Surf Coast Shire Council has started resurfacing Fischer Street in central Torquay, between Beach Road and Zeally Bay Road, alongside Taylor Park. Councillor Phoebe Crockett said the work is funded through the council's 2026-27 asset renewal budget and aims to improve ageing roads. Traffic detours will stay in place until the works finish in December. Sections of Pearl Street, Bristol Road, Cliff Street, Walker Street and Boston Road will also be resurfaced this financial year. The works represent a $755,000 investment.

Filling potholes and sealing cracks

Northern Beaches Council says its crews have filled 3,162 potholes since 1 July. Crews have also sealed 13,305 linear metres of cracks across 15 streets and completed 6,990 square metres of heavy patching at 39 locations. Major renewal works have been completed in Dee Why, Clontarf and Balgowlah, with a further 100,000 square metres of road renewal due before the end of the financial year. McIntosh Road in Dee Why was resurfaced over a gas main using a specialised geogrid, which the council says extends the road's life at a fraction of full reconstruction cost.
