Coalition warns Greens' $45b mining tax threat puts regional jobs and projects like Balranald at risk

Federal Coalition resources spokespeople have pushed back against Greens claims that the mining sector is undertaxed by $45 billion a year. They warn that new taxes could drive companies out of Australia. Shadow ministers say the industry has paid over $430 billion in taxes and royalties over the past decade, funding rural roads, healthcare and education. They say new tax measures would put regional jobs and projects at risk, including Iluka Resources' mineral sands project at Balranald in the Riverina.

Australian industry reliant on gas for ‘foreseeable future’, resources minister tells press club

Resources minister Madeleine King says Australian industry will rely on gas for the foreseeable future. Speaking to the National Press Club, she said the national gas reservation scheme should push down power prices. The scheme will require gas companies to set aside 20 per cent of exports for domestic use and is expected to start in January 2028. King did not say when households and businesses would see financial relief. She said there is currently no replacement for gas in some industries.

ABC AM with Rachel Mealey

Resources Minister Madeleine King has downplayed the impact of a recent High Court ruling on fossil fuel industries, asserting that it pertains specifically to a planning approval process in New South Wales. She emphasised that the decision does not threaten jobs, as the Mount Pleasant mine will continue operations until 2032. King noted that the ruling sets no precedent for other states, as each has its own legislation. She praised the Minns Government's coal industry policy for providing certainty to the sector.
