Gerringong man refuses to let rare cancer slow him down, tackling charity walk days after surgery

Gerringong man Alex Righton, 33, is living with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare cancer of the bile ducts. He was diagnosed after surgery for an unrelated gallbladder removal. His wife Kelly says little is known about the disease, and doctors often lack data to recommend treatments. The family is raising money for research through the 7 Bridges Walk, a 28 km Cancer Council event across Sydney bridges. They have raised more than $7500, beyond their $5000 goal.

Biomanufacturing boost for Brisbane

A state-of-the-art biomanufacturing facility called ENTRI has opened in south Brisbane. It is the first purpose-built facility in Australia certified under current Good Manufacturing Practice standards set by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. The more than $100 million project is backed by federal, Queensland and Translational Research Institute funding. ENTRI is expected to create 500 skilled science jobs. Officials say it will help biotech firms move research towards patient treatments without sending production overseas.

Slashing foreign student numbers would cripple research, uni head says

The University of Tasmania's vice-chancellor, Rufus Black, has warned that the national migration debate is harming Australia's reputation in Asia. Speaking to a state parliamentary inquiry in Hobart, he said international students help fund research. He said cuts proposed by the Coalition and One Nation would have a major economic impact and could take years to recover from. The Coalition's new policy would cut international student commencements to 240,000 a year, while One Nation has proposed a limit of 100,000.
