Emergency Visa Process No Substitute For Lasting Workforce Reform

The National Farmers’ Federation has welcomed emergency help for urgent farm worker visa applications. It warns the arrangement cannot replace long-term reform of regional workforce and migration settings. NFF President Hamish McIntyre said the referrals help some farms facing urgent shortages, but a lasting solution is needed. The federation said regional tourism, hospitality and small businesses also rely on Working Holiday Makers. It wants regular visa processing restored, an improved Pacific labour scheme and a dedicated agricultural visa.

NFF Welcomes Coalition Commitment To Introduce New Agriculture Visa

The National Farmers' Federation has welcomed the Coalition's commitment to introduce a dedicated Agriculture Visa from 2030. The federation says the visa must complement existing workforce programs rather than replace them. NFF president Hamish McIntyre said no single visa could meet every farm's labour needs. He said Working Holiday Makers filled about one in seven Australian farm jobs. The federation also welcomed plans to remove proposed caps and the ballot system for Working Holiday Maker visa extensions.

Minister visit highlights Key Apprenticeship Program

Skills and Training Minister Andrew Giles joined Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters at a Quarry Hill worksite to promote federal incentives for housing construction apprentices. The Key Apprenticeship Program pays new apprentices $10,000 in five instalments over their training. Almost 12,000 apprentices have joined since launch, with carpentry and joinery the most popular trade in the regional housing stream. Regional Victoria has recorded 3,010 housing construction apprenticeship commencements. Giles said more homes are needed, including outside metropolitan areas, and that more people need to start working on building sites.
