Brisbane man accused of paying $90k bribe over wife’s murder seeks bail

A Brisbane man accused of paying more than $90,000 to influence a Bangladeshi murder investigation into his wife has been refused bail. Police allege Awlad Hossain, 51, sought to have his name removed from records in the probe into the death of Rehana Parvin, whose body was found in Bangladesh in 2024. Hossain has indicated he will fight the bribery charge. Magistrate Tim Hoshin said there was no way to mitigate the risk of him reoffending or failing to appear in court. His solicitor says the decision will be contested in the Supreme Court.

Death penalty threat floated by widower seeking bail

A magistrate in Brisbane has refused bail to Awlad Hossain, a 50-year-old welder from Ipswich accused of trying to bribe officials investigating the death of his wife in Bangladesh. Prosecutors allege he sent more than $96,000 to stop police linking him and his family to her death. Hossain's lawyer argued he was unlikely to flee because he could face execution in Bangladesh and extradition is unlikely. The magistrate said no conditions could reduce the risk of him fleeing or offending. Hossain will now seek bail in Queensland's Supreme Court.

Queensland home buyers flee Brisbane for regional property hotspots amid rate hikes

Cash-strapped Queenslanders are moving away from Brisbane's established suburbs towards regional mining, farming and manufacturing towns, according to new quarterly sales data from InfoTrack. The Reserve Bank's four rate rises this year lifted the cash rate to 4.6 per cent, cutting borrowing power. Regional hotspots such as Kirwan in Townsville, Maryborough, Gracemere and Emerald appear in the state's top 10 house markets, with median prices well below the $890,000 statewide average. InfoTrack's Lee Bailie said affordability is driving the shift.
