Property giant’s grim recession warning as Aus economy faces ‘hard landing’

Charter Hall managing director David Harrison has warned that Australia risks sliding into recession, with rising unemployment and stubborn inflation threatening a painful downturn. Speaking at the Property Council of Australia's Property Congress in Brisbane, he blamed years of heavy government spending and rising debt for leaving the economy vulnerable. He said the Reserve Bank faces a difficult balancing act and warned that interest rates held too high for too long could cause a hard landing. Harrison suggested unemployment could rise above five per cent.

The more big companies axe staff, the closer we get to a recession

NAB has announced it will cut 2,500 staff to make the bank simpler and more efficient, with its chief executive saying customer-facing roles will be largely unaffected. ANZ has also flagged job reductions. The writer warns that if other large banks and companies follow, the economy could weaken further. Productivity has fallen, the Reserve Bank has raised interest rates four times this year, and some economists warn that more job losses could bring a recession.

‘I can disappear the budget deficit overnight. The NDIS is basically the budget deficit’: Chris Joye

Economist Chris Joye has warned that Australia is heading towards a recession, with falling property prices, rising business failures and persistent inflation. Speaking on Mark Bouris's Straight Talk podcast, he forecast a 17 per cent fall in Sydney property prices and a 13 per cent fall nationally. He said the national decline could exceed previous records before Christmas. Joye also argued that government spending, migration and weak productivity are keeping inflation high. He proposed cutting the National Disability Insurance Scheme and the public service, and he said the Reserve Bank should have raised rates further.
