Australians run 80 hours or more in 'crazy' race with no finish line

Australian runners are competing in the Backyard Ultra World Team Championship at Kembla Grange in New South Wales. Each athlete must complete a 6.7-kilometre loop every hour until only one runner remains, with the event lasting beyond four days. Jonathan Ash and Brandon Lee Gretch both withdrew after injuries, while Phil Gore is sidelined this year. Dan Camac was the last Australian left, completing his 87th lap, and the Australian team recorded a combined 1,069 laps.

Making of Multicultural Canberra: He rarely felt different in 1961. Six decades later, Rakesh says he does

Rakesh Ahuja arrived in Canberra in 1961 as a 14-year-old and says he experienced no overt discrimination during his early years. He later became a diplomat and served as Australia's deputy high commissioner in India. Ahuja now says he sees a growing racial divide, which he links to September 11 and to behaviour within parts of the Indian community. He also criticises how Australia expanded international education. He says Canberra remains his favourite city.

Offensive tirades on race and religion shouldn’t be the norm in Australian politics

A Guardian Australia column argues that offensive tirades on race and religion should not be normal in Australian politics. It points to a video released by Pauline Hanson for next month's Victorian state election, which includes racist stereotypes and drew little reaction beyond social media. The column recalls that in 2024 the federal court found Hanson breached the Racial Discrimination Act over comments made to Greens senator Mehreen Faruqi. Hanson has said she will ask the high court to overturn that ruling. The writer says the Victorian campaign may preview the next federal election.
