Pormpuraaw residents are receiving their first care at a new $35.4 million health centre. An open day on 14 October welcomed community members, staff and first patients, with a blessing ceremony and traditional dancers. The Yalu Street facility includes treatment rooms, medical imaging, dental services and six consultation rooms. Stage two, which adds a morgue, mourning area and local artworks, is expected to be completed in early 2027.
A new $35.4 million Primary Health Care Centre has opened in Pormpuraaw, Queensland, with staff and the first patients now using the facility. A community Open Day marked the completion of construction work. The centre, on Yalu Street, was built beside the existing clinic so services could continue during construction. It includes treatment and imaging rooms, dental facilities and a culturally appropriate morgue. Stage 2 works, including landscaping and demolition of the former facility, are expected to finish in early 2027.
Young people in Pormpuraaw left the 2026 youth summit feeling inspired, motivated and supported, organisers say. The five-day Pormpur Ngamplin Pam Mongthak event combined sport, workshops and services such as help with birth certificates and blue cards. Employers also spoke about job opportunities. CEO Ganthi Kuppusamy said a question session gave young people a chance to raise gaps and challenges they face. She said their confidence has grown with each year of the event, which has drawn growing local and external engagement.

Wells, representing Brisbane's northern suburbs, highlighted the $40 million Community Wi-Fi Program, which has connected over 70 locations, including seven in Queensland. She emphasised the importance of connectivity for education, employment, and community engagement, particularly in remote areas like Pormpuraaw. Wells also addressed the role of AI in society and the government's commitment to ensuring its benefits are widely shared. The discussion took place on Bumma Bippera Media's National Talkblack program, hosted by Trevor Tim.
Federal Communications Minister Anika Wells is in Pormpuraaw, where free Community Wi-Fi has been opened as part of a federal investment of $40 million across two programs. The Wi-Fi is based at the local library and reaches the rest of the town through six satellite hubs. Wells said residents who can connect can use government services, banking and education tools, as well as public broadcasters, though coverage is not guaranteed everywhere. Further rollouts are planned for more than 70 communities nationally, seven of them in Queensland.
