Celebrating seventy years of play

Gleneagle State School celebrated 70 years of play on September 16 with an Under 8s Day attended by more than 150 community members. Children, parents and extended family took part in pony rides, cookie decorating, loose parts play, sensory play and hula hoops. Local police and firefighters also visited. Under 8s Day coordinator and Prep teacher Shannon Taylor said the event gave families and younger children a welcoming way to connect with the school before starting Prep.

Left alone with nothing to do, AI agents started playing

AI agents left to explore a virtual island with no set task began inventing challenges for themselves, MIT researchers report. Thirteen agents, each running on Claude Opus 4.7, spent 30 hours on a simulated desert island. Agents that had played generally outperformed identical agents that had never explored the island when later given specific challenges. Six agents discovered they could throw a block farther by letting go mid-jump, a feature the researchers had not intended. The researchers see unguided exploration as a possible way to build skills for future robots.

Celebrating 50 years of play and community

Families, children and community members gathered at Fremantle PCYC to celebrate 50 years of the Freo Toy Library and Fremantle PCYC. The day offered fun, play and connection for local families. Community organisations, stallholders, volunteers and City teams helped make the event possible. The celebration recognised the founders, volunteers, staff, members and families who have shaped both organisations. The City thanked everyone who attended, organised and supported the two organisations over five decades.
