'Not every decision was bad': under-fire plasma giant

Melbourne-based CSL, under pressure over weak earnings and its share price, has appointed Deborah Waterhouse as its first female chief executive. Ms Waterhouse joins in February from ViiV Healthcare, which she led for 10 years. Outgoing chair Brian McNamee told a shareholders meeting that not every decision the company made was bad. CSL reported a statutory net loss of $US2.6 billion for 2025/26, driven by writedowns in its Vifor business. Its share price has fallen about 70 per cent since July 2024.

Urgent need for blood and plasma donations in northern suburbs

Lifeblood WA says its blood and plasma reserves have hit their lowest level in almost a decade. The Edgewater donor centre, the only permanent blood donation point in the northern suburbs, needs 250 blood donations and 240 plasma donations before the end of October. Lifeblood director Jessica Willet says blood donations have dropped by 60 per cent since June, due to a prolonged cold and flu season. She says time is the biggest barrier for people. Donations can be booked through the Lifeblood app.

KDE turns 30 with Plasma 6.8, remote upgrades, and an X11 farewell

KDE has released Plasma 6.8 to mark its 30th anniversary on October 14, and the update removes support for starting new X11 sessions. Legacy X11 applications will still run through the XWayland compatibility layer, and KDE applications will keep supporting X11 under other desktop environments. Users who stay on Plasma 6.7 can keep their existing sessions for now. The new version adds better window decorations for third-party apps, a streamlined Union theming system, Nvidia triple buffering enabled by default, and the Kup backup utility built into Plasma. It also includes kscreenctl, a command-line tool for adjusting display settings.
