An expansion to Cairns State Special School has been officially opened. Two new buildings and new outdoor learning spaces include therapy and sensory rooms, specialist equipment, a new playground and extra car parking. The school principal, Alicia Smith, said the facilities would let students keep learning tailored to their needs. Premier David Crisafulli said the government is delivering more special schools to give families more choice. Member for Mulgrave Terry James said the extra capacity would ease pressure from growing local enrolments.
Victorian Labor has pledged a $30 cap on freeway tolls if re-elected at the November 28 state election, matching the Coalition's earlier offer of a $50 cap. Premier Ben Carroll said the scheme would help small businesses keep growing. Labor's plan would start early next year and use a rebate system covering individuals and small businesses, with a maximum rebate of $350 a week or $5,000 a year. Vehicles including cars, utes, motorbikes and vans would be eligible, and small businesses could claim for up to five vehicles.
Nelson Park School in Corio has unveiled a $6.4 million learning centre, featuring four classrooms and two specialist areas for senior students. The state-funded project includes an administration building, decking and landscaping, aimed at fostering independence and life skills. Lara MP Ella George officially opened the facilities, highlighting the investment's focus on modern, inclusive spaces. The school supports 350 students with mild intellectual disabilities, offering tailored programs with therapist and wellbeing support. This follows a $10 million upgrade of the school's Libau campus in 2024, which added flexible learning spaces and specialist facilities.
