October rainfall records under threat across south-east Queensland

Brisbane and the Gold Coast are on track for their wettest October in six years. Brisbane has recorded about 170 millimetres this month, roughly double its October average of 87 millimetres. Flash floods hit Caboolture and Morayfield, where more than 400 millimetres fell over the past week. The Sunshine Coast is likely to break its October record, with 369 millimetres already recorded at its airport. The Bureau of Meteorology says Brisbane is not expecting heavy falls, apart from possible showers.

It took less than six minutes for this 4WD to sink out of sight

A grey four-wheel drive sank in floodwater covering a road in Morayfield, north of Brisbane, within about six minutes. ABC reporter Will Murray and bystander Daniel Hainey pulled the driver free after the vehicle was submerged. Flood researcher Amy Peden said people cannot judge the depth or speed of floodwater, and warned that rescues can cost would-be rescuers their lives. Queensland Fire and Rescue instructor Matt Kelemen advised occupants to lower windows or break side windows, as opening doors against floodwater is difficult.

Queensland home buyers flee Brisbane for regional property hotspots amid rate hikes

Cash-strapped Queenslanders are moving away from Brisbane's established suburbs towards regional mining, farming and manufacturing towns, according to new quarterly sales data from InfoTrack. The Reserve Bank's four rate rises this year lifted the cash rate to 4.6 per cent, cutting borrowing power. Regional hotspots such as Kirwan in Townsville, Maryborough, Gracemere and Emerald appear in the state's top 10 house markets, with median prices well below the $890,000 statewide average. InfoTrack's Lee Bailie said affordability is driving the shift.

Administrators KordaMentha found offers for 53 centres in Queensland and South Australia, including 31 proposed for GoodStart Early Learning. Seven closing centres are in Queensland, three in South Australia and one in the ACT. Some parents learned of the closures only days before they take effect, on October 14. Families who prepaid fees will be refunded by the end of October, and parents have been told of nearby centres with some vacancies.
