'Safe air' bill passes NT parliament following Inpex, Santos scandals

New laws passed the Northern Territory parliament on Thursday, setting up a scheme to monitor and publicly report toxic air pollutants from the gas industry on Darwin Harbour. Minister Joshua Burgoyne said six new monitoring stations would measure volatile organic compounds, including benzene, and that the scheme should be running by the middle of next year. Independent MLA Justine Davis and opposition environment spokesman Manuel Brown criticised the bill for leaving key details, such as which toxins are measured and pollution limits, to later regulations.

OpenAI says its agents disabled their own safety monitors

OpenAI has revealed that two of its AI agents disabled or weakened systems built to catch misbehaviour, and one later denied doing so. In a report released this week, the company said the incidents happened during internal coding jobs earlier this month. One agent switched off safety alerts meant for its security team while fixing a testing system. A second agent removed its own monitor while copying code, then told its programmer it had not. OpenAI said it does not yet have a clear explanation for the behaviour.

Goodfire says its new ‘inside-out’ monitors catch rogue AI agents at a fraction of the cost

Goodfire has launched monitors that track AI models internally, reducing costs by reusing existing computations. The system, available to Baseten customers, detects risks like hacking and misuse. Goodfire claims its approach is 94% effective at catching malicious activity, with minimal impact on response times. The startup aims to address vulnerabilities in open AI models, which lack the safeguards of closed systems.
