Half of teens miss out on daily activities due to period symptoms, Australian poll finds

Half of Australian teenagers who have periods miss school, sport, social activities or other important experiences because of symptoms, a national poll has found. The Royal Children's Hospital National Child Health Poll surveyed 1,595 teenagers aged 12 to 17 and 2,285 parents. Eighty-nine per cent of teens who have periods regularly experience period pain, and two in five with moderate or severe pain have not sought healthcare. Almost two-thirds of teenagers surveyed said they knew nothing or only a little about periods. Health experts said open conversations could reduce stigma and encourage teenagers to seek medical advice when needed.

Disrupted daily lives: New study unearths reality of teens’ period pain

Half of Australian teenagers surveyed say period pain has affected their ability to complete everyday tasks and activities. The 43rd National Child Health Poll questioned 1595 teens aged 12 to 17 and 2285 parents. Almost three in ten teens said they had missed extracurricular activities, and 28 per cent had missed school. Around two in five teens with moderate or severe pain had not sought health care. Dr Anthea Rhodes said young people should not have to put up with pain that disrupts their daily lives, and called for better education about periods.
