NASA, Partners Accelerate Lander Development for 2028 Moon Missions

NASA and its commercial partners Blue Origin and SpaceX have streamlined lander designs and changed how their crewed landers will operate for Moon missions. NASA plans to return astronauts to the lunar surface in 2028 and establish a Moon base. Under the revised plan, the landers and the Orion spacecraft will meet in different orbits, and both companies must complete uncrewed demonstration missions first. Artemis III has been redefined as a test of rendezvous and docking in low Earth orbit next year. NASA has also added development milestones to increase its oversight of lander work.

NASA updates lander plans for Moon landings, finally solves long-festering Orion issue

NASA is working to give lunar landers the option of docking with its Orion spacecraft in low-lunar orbit, a few hundred kilometres above the Moon. NASA says this would greatly cut the fuel that Blue Moon needs to carry astronauts to the surface and back. NASA has also announced work with United Launch Alliance on an extended version of the Centaur V upper stage. Together with the Space Launch System core stage, it would allow Orion to reach low-lunar orbit, a capability NASA has long lacked. Administrator Isaacman said the agency is helping its landing partners.
