‘Slave labour’: Tradies who built Wagga public housing will never be paid

Tradies who built four public housing units at 16 Spring Street in Wagga will never be paid for their work. The liquidator has confirmed there is no money left to repay unsecured creditors, including the subcontractors. Subcontractor Amy Burns of Oasis Scaffolding and Bricklaying says her business is owed $90,000 and calls the situation slave labour. Homes NSW says it had no contract with the subcontractors and has no legal authority to pay them. Wagga MP Joe McGirr has called on the government to act as guarantor for the affected businesses.

Loan of $20m to troubled smelter deemed high risk, govt went ahead anyway

An internal document shows the Tasmanian government was advised to approve a $20 million loan to Liberty Bell Bay, the country's only manganese smelter, despite high risk of not recovering all the money. The advice judged that doing nothing carried greater risk. The smelter closed in July and was liquidated, costing more than 200 jobs. Minister Felix Ellis said the government stood by its decision, saying the loan gave workers the best chance of a future. The smelter's administrator believes the company was insolvent from May 2025, though its directors declared solvency in August that year.

Sale rescues landmark WA dairy brands from collapse

Local processor Artisanal Market has bought the brands and assets of collapsed Mundella Foods and Margaret River Dairy Company, which went into liquidation in August. Creditors are owed millions of dollars. The sum paid was not disclosed. Yoghurt production is expected to start near Margaret River before Christmas, at the Metricup facility, which is export approved. The Mundijong site will be mothballed due to its poor condition. Managing director Kevin Sorgiovanni said the new owners also hope to sell to Asian markets.
